Blackbaud Security Incident
What is the Blackbaud security incident?
In July 2020, we were informed of a security incident at Blackbaud, our point of sale and database vendor. Blackbaud is one of the largest companies in its industry and serves non-profits around the globe. They informed us that at some point between February and May of this year, they experienced a ransomware attack described as a large operation that involved the data from multiple nonprofit organizations.
How does this affect me?
Hands On Children’s Museum holds the privacy and security of your information as a top priority and we want to share the information we have. Blackbaud stated that the cybercriminals did not obtain credit card information because it is encrypted. Hands On Children’s Museum does not collect or store other sensitive information such as social security numbers or bank information.
According to Blackbaud, personal data that may have been accessed in the attack could have included your name and address, telephone numbers, children’s birth dates, and purchase or donation history. Current and former HOCM members, donors, camp and preschool families, and HOCM event attendees may have been affected.
What is the level of risk for any compromised information?
Very low. Blackbaud did A LOT to keep all our information safe in turn making the risks remain low. Blackbaud, working with law enforcement and independent forensic experts, has stated that they believe the data affected in the ransomware attack has been destroyed and they have hired an external security team to continually monitor for evidence to the contrary. They have no reason to believe there will be any public disclosure of data.
